While you need to flex your brain, its health is related to how often you flex your muscles. Working out, or simply going for a nice long walk, can help develop tiny blood vessels. These carry oxygen to the brain and may keep you from experiencing early mental decline. Marla Ahlgrimm notes that physical activity also works to improve cholesterol and reduce mental stress, which is also good for the brain.
The food you eat directly impacts the ability of your brain to function properly. Make sure to eat plenty of foods that provide vitamins B12, B6, and folic acid. These nutrients may lower your homocysteine levels, which, when found in abundance, contribute to dementia. Leafy greens and fortified cereals are excellent sources of these three B vitamins, asserts Marla Ahlgrimm.
Alcohol and tobacco
While you already know that alcohol and tobacco are bad for your heart, lungs, and liver, each of these legal chemicals has ties to mental degradation. Tobacco products of all kinds, including cigarettes and chewing tobacco, should be completely avoided. Alcohol may be consumed in moderation, which Marla Ahlgrimm describes as no more than two drinks in a 24 hour timeframe. Some studies suggest that occasional moderate alcohol consumption may actually be beneficial, so feel free to enjoy a glass of wine with dinner once a week.
