Not only does fish provide scores of protein and omega-3’s, cold-water varieties including sardines, tuna, and cod are an outstanding source of DHA. According to Marla Ahlgrimm, DHA is a naturally occurring chemical compound which helps support the structural integrity of cell membranes and may ward off macular degeneration.

Leafy greens

Leafy green vegetables such as kale and spinach contain high levels of carotenoids that help shield the delicate tissue of the eye from harmful blue light.


Scrambled eggs are a favorite breakfast choice of Marla Ahlgrimm and serve up a healthy dose of amino acids. As well, the sulfur content of eggs works to inhibit cataract formation.

Garlic and onions

Regarded worldwide for its blood boosting benefits, a glass of wine a day can help protect the cardiovascular system, which directly affects the eyes.

Extra virgin olive oil

Marla Ahlgrimm says no list of healthy foods would be complete without a mention of EVOO, which contains healthy fats not found in synthetic cooking oils and margarine.

Pharmacist Marla Ahlgrimm revolutionized the field of women’s health in the 1970s and continues to do so today. Founded in 1982, Madison Pharmacy Associates was the first pharmacy to special in women’s health in the nation. Thanks to the expertise of Marla Ahlgrimm, Madison Pharmacy Associates became known for the management of PMS.
