Olive oil has long been a staple of kitchens around the world, shares pharmacist, Marla Ahlgrimm. In recent years, this longtime pharmacist has witnessed the emergence of a number of oil alternatives for people who are seeking improved health and wellness.
Extracted from sesame seeds, this oil has been shown to ward off diabetes, lower cholesterol and help prevent sunburn, reports Marla Ahlgrimm. Drizzling a tablespoon of sesame oil on Asian dishes – pad Thai, for example – can be an excellent way to obtain several antioxidants that might be otherwise missing from one’s daily diet.
For individuals who are experiencing painful joint conditions, avocado oil is a great asset, notes Marla Ahlgrimm. However, given how expensive avocado oil can be, most people may prefer to eat actual avocados instead. Avocados contain much-needed fiber as well, says Marla Ahlgrimm. If a person wishes to purchase avocado oil, it can be a terrific moisturizer for dry skin.
Just like fish oil, walnut oil includes a broad range of omega-3 fatty acid. According to Marla Ahlgrimm, one omega-3 fatty acid in particular – alpha linolenic acid – helps in regulating the immune and nervous systems. Walnut oil has also been lauded for its ability to lower blood pressure and keep stress levels in check. Marla Ahlgrimm explains that this is one oil that must be served cold as heating may cause nutrients to be stripped away. For the right preparation, drizzle a teaspoon of cold-pressed walnut oil on vegetables or pasta salads.
Among other healthy components, coconut oil features lauric acid and medium-chain triglycerides, shares Marla Ahlgrimm. Medium-chain triglycerides have been proven to improve digestion and balance cholesterol. The recommended amount is, at maximum, three tablespoons each day.
